Cognitive Function: Optimizing Brain Health with Nutrition
This course (3 Hours/3 CEUs) equips clinicians with a comprehensive understanding of brain physiology, pathophysiology, and the role of nutrition and herbal support in cognitive health.
Across three modules, learners explore the key factors that influence brain function, the mechanisms that contribute to cognitive decline, and the clinical relevance of Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) in relation to biotoxins and brain health. The course combines foundational science with practical clinical insight, helping practitioners better understand the complex relationship between nutrition, inflammation, and neurological function.
Throughout the course, participants examine topics such as fueling the brain, the role of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), cognitive testing tools, pathological contributors to decline, and targeted nutrition and herbal strategies that may support cognitive resilience. Special attention is given to the identification, screening, and treatment considerations surrounding CIRS, giving learners a framework for recognizing patients who may be affected by chronic inflammatory responses.
By the end of the course, clinicians will have a clearer understanding of normal and pathological brain physiology, the impact of inflammation and biotoxins on cognition, and the practical role of nutrition and herbal support in patient care. This knowledge can help practitioners make more informed recommendations to better support brain health and improve patient outcomes.
Module One: Keeping Your Head On – What the Brain Needs

In this module, participants will delve into the diverse elements that affect brain health. Key aspects of fueling the brain will be examined, along with an in-depth exploration of the Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), including its mechanisms and the factors that affect its function. Participants will also explore recent research on brain health and cognition, as well as discover how particular nutrients and herbs can be utilized to enhance cognitive function in patients.
Module Two: Don’t Lose Your Mind – What Damages the Brain

This module delves into potential causes of cognitive decline and their effects on brain health pathophysiology. It evaluates important scientific literature on brain health and introduces practitioner tools for cognitive function testing. Participants will also learn to recognize patterns of Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome and explore different nutrition and herbal interventions to improve cognitive function.
Module Three: Mold and Microbes – The #1 Cause of Cognitive Decline

The final module focuses on Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) and its relation to biotoxins and the brain. Learners will understand the clinical presentation of CIRS, identifying key symptoms and manifestations. The module covers the mechanism of CIRS, the systems involved, and the challenges in recognizing and diagnosing it. Participants will learn how to screen patients for CIRS and discuss treatment approaches. Guidance on recognizing potential CIRS patients and performing proper screenings is also included.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the key physiological processes that support cognitive health, including brain energy metabolism, neuroplasticity, Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), circulation, and mitochondrial function.
- Evaluate the multifactorial causes and risk factors associated with cognitive decline, integrating current evidence to inform clinical assessment and decision-making.
- Apply appropriate screening and assessment tools to identify cognitive impairment and recognize patterns associated with Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS).
- Develop evidence-informed nutrition, botanical, and lifestyle strategies to support cognitive function, neuroprotection, and the clinical management of patients with cognitive dysfunction.
